I think in terms of diagrams and flows. In meetings with clients I start sketching out relationships and hierarchies for my own benefit, but also for theirs. I find that putting a picture in front of a client lets us respond collectively to something concrete and see where our understandings overlap and where they diverge.
First and foremost, the key is to find the root of the problem to be solved before running to design a solution. Once the core need is identified, I work with the client to ensure we map out the needs and constraints of the people involved and the processes and goals that need to be supported. I fell into this work unexpectedly and have learned so much over the years. I am proud that even my earliest app is still in daily use helping a team be more productive and efficient, 8 years later.
